April Smith at McCabe's Guitar Shop
5:45 am, 16th Dec 2008
Thanks to Adina, former roommate and ultimate music insider, Donna and I got tickets to see my friend April Smith perform in LA this past Friday, 12/12!
The venue was McCabe’s Guitar Shop, which at first made us go, “Hmmm?” but it turned out to be fricking awesome! I miss NY whenever I’m in LA (though I hardly miss LA when I’m in NY), but this is one place I wish we had one of in NY!
April is on tour with the legendary JD Souther, who entertained the audience with bittersweet blues and childhood stories of meeting Victor Borge. April totally rocked (as usual) and won over a crowd of people our parents’ age with her gorgeous voice and witty lyrics, including:
Donna and I were checking out the cool instruments and stuff at McCabe’s when we looked over and saw Forrest Gump himself complimenting April and buying her CDs – COOOL!!!
We found out later on that it was McCabe’s 50th anniversary that night. They have a huuge selection of new and vintage instruments, including guitars (of course), ukuleles (yaaay!), dulcimers, autoharps, mandos and tons of other non-traditional traditional instruments. First of all, it is fricking awesome to know that such a cool independent music store has been in business for SO long, but it’s also rad that it present concerts!
The crowd was full of hardcore music lovers and musicians (you could totally tell who was getting a boner from being in a room full of instruments, moi included). Everyone from Bill Monroe to Jello Biafria to Jeff Buckley to to Betty Carter has performed at McCabe’s! They have a huge showroom that they convert into audience seating, and there’s a decent sized stage on one side of the room. For New Yorkers, imagine the Bowery Poetry Club flipped sideways with a smaller stage – combined with a guitar shop (it’s cool, right?!).
